State of Sport Adress: Never Forget to Perfect Your Craft

A year ago we started Fan-I.com and the first article was titled “Kendall’s “State of Sports” Address. I spoke about how sports was becoming more of a business than the actual sport, something all of us at Fan-I speak about a lot. We believe that the business should never come before the sport. I think it’s time now for another State of Sport Address but this time it will put the scope on the athletes that play the sports we love at the highest levels, College and Pro. And I drop the “Kendall’s” off because this is not just how I feel, this a consensual viewpoint throughout Fan-I. And I’m sure after you read this, you’ll feel the same way.

Sports maybe one of the most lucrative industries in the world today. I would put sports on the level of oil and technology when you think money making industries. And it’s funny because most big owners make their money in those other 2 lucrative industries. But athletes are what drives this billion $ dollar industry. If the sports industry is a Bugatti then the athletes are the horsepower. And even though the athletes aren’t billion dollar moguls like their master *oops* I mean owners, but they still walk away with deep pockets. Jordan maybe the richest athlete from a team sport seeing as though he owns a team in the league he played in. I can’t think of many athletes that can say that other than Nolan Ryan and Mario Lemieux, who both own the team they played for. Most of the big earners when it come to athletes play individual sports. Tiger Woods is the only billion dollar athlete to walk this planet. And Athletes like Tiger or Serena Williams make most of their earnings in endorsements from billion dollars companies that invest into the sports industry for marketing. But keep in mind that everyone I named is the best in their respective sport and when you’re the best, you don’t lose. And when you don’t lose that means you’re winning and winning brings money as you can see.

And don’t get me wrong, money is always the thing to accumulate in life, but sometimes that accumulation sometimes cloud what you began doing it for; the love and to be the best. Only the greatest carry that mantra on their way to financial freedom. But sometimes even they slip up. Perfect example, look at my man Anderson “Spider” Silva. Dropped by Chris Weidman this past Saturday in UFC 162 because he was showboating. Silva is a better fighter than Weidman (even though other fighters pick him to win) and Weidman doesn’t claim a $10 million dollar net worth like Silva(6th wealthiest MMA fighter according to celebritiesnetworrth.com). Instead he is fighting for his family and respect.

Situations like Silva being knocked out happens all the time in sports. Just this year in Wimbledon, Rodger Federer and Rafael Nadal were eliminated by players I never heard of. That’s why I titled this Never Forget to Perfect your Craft. When you’re the best, competitors are going to fly at you hoping to take your top spot. But when you’re the best the money start rolling in and the love start rolling out. This the main reason why I don’t want college athletes to receive compensation for playing but I also think the schools and NCAA shouldn’t make as much money as they do off the athletes. March Madness is the best time of the year for most sports fans. It’s 65 of the best teams going at in a single elimination tournament for the National Championship. No money just to say “We the Champs”. Add money to that players wouldn’t be as hungry as they would without the money.

Without the Athletes, Sports wouldn’t be a billion dollar industry because us, the fans, love the athletes not the people that pay me. We become fanatics of their skills and sometimes personality, not the owners who write the checks and talk smack in the luxury box. But sometimes our favorite stars forget why they began playing whatever sport it is they play. Athletes now go through holdouts for more money, leave college early even though their not ready for the money, or they jump ship for more money. People always say money is the root of all evil but in sports I think money is the root of lost love for the game.
